Happy Birthday Grandpa!!

We celebrated Grandpa Ryan's 90th birthday on Saturday. It was nice to see everyone again. Especially for such a happy occasion. Here are some pics of the get together. And a few interesting facts about how the world has changed during his lifetime.

In 1916 the US population was approximately 91,972,266 people. Today it is approximately 295,734,134. That is more than three times the population of 1916.

Only about one and a quarter million cars were registered in the U.S in 1916 (about one for every 74 people). Today there are over 243 million (nearly one car per person).

On October 11th, 1916, Boston Red Sox beat the Brooklyn Robins 4-3 to go up three games to one on their way to win the 13th World Series (their third title in 5 seasons, and fourth total). There have been 91 championship series since.

A touchdown, in the NFL, was worth five points.

The sixth Indianapolis 500 road race was held in 1916.

Some celebrities he shares a birthday with:

Novelist Elmore Leonard (1925)
Actress Joan Cusack (1962)
Actor Luke Perry (1966)

He was born before women had the right to vote (1920).

He has lived through a Great Depression, Prohibition, two World Wars, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the war in Iraq.

He has seen sixteen presidents take office.

There were only 48 states in 1916.

On his 20th birthday, there were approximately 200 television sets in use world-wide. Today, there are over 314 million sets in the U.S. alone.

He was two years old when the first commercial airline transported passengers, by plane, between San Francisco and Oakland.
